Blacher: Orchestral Variations on a Theme of Paganini (RIAS Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ferenc Fricsay; Decca). The same theme (for solo violin) used by Brahms for his famed Variations gets some plain and fancy going-over by one of Germany's most successful living composers. Boris Blacher uses a big orchestra in opulent style, with emphasis on suave clarinet murmurings, massed brasses in swing-band style and ingratiating melodies. The disk is Vol. I of Decca's New Directions in Music and Sound. Debussy: Pelleas and Mélisande (Janine Micheau, Camille Maurane; chorus and Lamoureux Orchestra conducted...

Malagueña (Caterina Valente; Decca). A combination of German Weltschmerz and Latin languor that is not so odd as it seems. Songstress Valente was - born in Paris of an Italian father and a French mother, and lives in Germany. Six important labels (Capitol, Columbia, Decca, London, Mercury, MGM) are meeting Victor's prices of $3.98 a 12-inch disk, with exceptions for complete operas and other particularly expensive performances. Angel, Westminster, Vox and Cook all claim special qualities for their recordings, are hewing to the original $5.95 price line. Others have agreed on a $4.98 "suggested" price. Manhattan's Sam Goody's, the major record discount...

...Bells of St. Mary's. The U.S. may have changed in 20 years, but not Crosbyland: the emotions are pleasant, never heated, and just a bit weary, the words are confidently unsophisticated, the crooning exactly what it was when Bing made the first record put out by Decca (Just a Wearyin' for You) in 1934. Decca is launching its 20th anniversary "push" with the Crosby package, surrounded by a publicity campaign to recall some of its pioneering trade ventures (e.g., pop albums, children's records, original-cast recordings of Broadway shows). Among other Decca anniversary releases...
