Gore's Memphis retreat is expected to draw a decent crowd. While he will feature congressional Democrats as speakers, he did not invite Lieberman, who has said he will not run if Gore does (but is busily building his donor network in case Gore doesn't). Edwards' retreat will include a good-size contingent of trial lawyers--he used to be one himself--who also account for 86% of the money his pac has raised...

...Gotti and his cronies abandoned, if they ever really existed. Scorsese's Goodfellas (1990) got closer to the stupidity and venality of Mob life, but wiseguys still embraced it: from Henry Hill's glamorous Copacabana entrance to his ignominy in bland, witness-protection mid-America (where there's no decent red sauce), it told them they were somebodies, and that that beat being nobodies...

When the knockout tournament began (the final is on June 18), the prison boasted 1,158 foreigners?out of a total of 7,218 prisoners?from 56 countries. And while some of them are serving sentences of up to 30 years for crimes like armed robbery and murder, there aren't nearly as many hard cases and unregenerate desperados as you would find in Bang Kwang...

...Osama bin Laden's operatives are regrouping for new terror operations despite their rout in Afghanistan. Moroccan sources describe the suspects as killers hardened by battles in Afghanistan, who were nonetheless capable of shaving off their beards and melting into the local scene. They came across as such decent young men that one recent Moroccan acquaintance protested their innocence to police saying, "It is impossible that they are terrorists. They are so kind." So strong were there convictions, sources say, that they didn't bother to deny their Al Qaeda connections when police questioned them. "They are very convinced...
