...description of bowling on the green! [TIME, Aug. 29.] Bowling on the green !! Who called that a sport anyhow ? It sounds like old ladies' stuff to me, rolling little balls on the ground and not even socking anything with them! And then you have to insult all the decent men who, like myself, think real bowling is not only good exercise but good he-man sport: "bowling or tenpins, playe 1 now in indoor alleys by barflies and roustabouts." I don't claim to be any dude but I am no barfly and I BOWL, IN AN ALLEY...
...nicety, bawling out disorderly epithets at policemen, judges and governors! I say it is a sin against a fine tradition for newspapers and for TIME to harp on the fact that this rowdy roisterer, this half-baked "intellectual," this "radical nephew," Edward James, is related to his uncles. Vast waves of mechanical thinking. . . . There is no need to "square yourselves," as has been suggested. Your motives are clear, perfectly decent, and justified - to those who will take a little trouble to think...
...women are sick and tired of having to share golf clubs with rude men, men with fat stomachs and dirty cigars, dirtier language, boasting, conceit, overbearing attitude on the course when they drive right into women who are playing and treat us like lepers. They cannot hit decent shots or act decently. Half the time they are drunk while playing and debauch the little caddies with their stories and actions. It is to get away from all that kind of thing that the Chicago women are having their own club, I'm certain. Wearing knickers has nothing whatever...
