Luxury on Sale. The Art Deco Fontainebleau Miami Beach resort reopened in November after a $1 billion renovation. The hotel added an iMac to each of its 1,504 ocean-front rooms, plus a 40,000-sq.-ft. spa. Through Dec. 20, the Fontainebleau is offering special rates starting at $289 per night, which includes a $50 daily credit for use at the resort's spa, shops or 11 restaurants. NBC has temporarily transformed the iconic Rockefeller skating rink into a frozen map of the U.S.; the states will turn red or blue this evening as the election results are announced. In front of the art deco landmark, a gigantic TV screens display footage of the past 20 months of the campaign as The Today Show ticker streams news updates across the street. Tourists mill about in campaign buttons and patriotic outfits, posing for photos with the Republican donkey and Democratic elephant as if they were Disney...
...would be seen as a hoops savior is just one cue that the HSM movies dwell in a Disney fantasyland. Another is the obsessively color-coordinated outfits the kids wear to school, and touches of extravagant decor, like Troy's tree house, as big as an Astaire-Rogers Deco suite, redecorated in retro-rustic. (The roof opens too, apparently at voice command.) The biggest leap of make-believe is that the high school experience is wunnnnnderful - though this view is no less reductive than the one, in so many comedies and horror movies, that says high school is a Hades...
Boston Ballet is currently performing this most recent incarnation, which will run through Oct. 26, 2008. There are Art Deco sets and Roaring Twenties-inspired fashion: tousled chignons and sparkly fringe. There are also Holly Golightly-esque cigarette holders, an annoying paparazzo, a few Popeye types, and flamenco dancers. Yet for all this innovation, it’s not relatable. It’s neither real nor magical. There is neither a Patrick Dempsey nor a quixotic Prince Charming; instead a rather bored, whimsical type broods in their place.
