Ziegfeld Follies of 1936 (Brothers Shubert, Producers) falls comfortably into the mold of its 24 predecessors. None of its comedy is funny enough to make anyone wear himself out laughing. On the other hand, Vincente Minnelli's diverting surrealist decor, the arts of a half-dozen stars and the blandishments of 48 show girls are likely to keep most spectators from going to sleep. Only if he expects Josephine Baker to be something out of the ordinary will a ticket holder be actually disappointed by this year's Follies...

...Agnelli, Senator of the Realm and President of FIAT (Italian Automotive Works of Turin). Inconspicuous on each coach is the symbol RIC ("workable over all European railway lines"). This means three separate braking systems, two distinct electric lighting systems and alarms so ingeniously concealed and blended with the palace decor that a stranger would be quite unable to discover how to stop the palace-train in an emergency...

...samples of British comic opera jocosity, it requires almost two hours for the thieves to reach their bath of boiling oil. U. S. cinemaddicts may find the photography in Chu Chin Chow inferior to most recent Hollywood musicomedies, its narrative method stodgy, but are likely to approve the decor, Frederic Norton's music, the acting of the only performer in the cast whose name is familiar to them. Anna May Wong wriggles her eyebrows ably when placed on the slave auction-block, writhes in splendid style when compelled to turn the winch that opens the door of the robbers...

...look at the program was unnecessary to identify Shubert revues. Their hallmark was stage furnishings which suggested nothing so much as Eighth Avenue second-hand shops. The height of scenic imagination was usually a gauze drop behind which tottered in semidarkness a troupe of half-naked show girls. The decor of Life Begins at 8:40, turned out by the youngest and best man in the business, is no more like that of typical Shubert offerings than chicken salad is like chicken feed...
