...desire at full stretch: every form carries its physical freight--elbow, groin, folded belly, thigh, slipping and jostling in the paint as though mud wrestling in pigment. De Kooning could find metaphors of energy that none of his contemporaries could rival. And when he carried his "impurity" beyond the decorum of abstraction, as in the great women of the early to mid-'50s, he produced some extraordinarily intense images--funny, monstrous and laden with anxiety, rendered with a kind of desperate verve. "I find I can paint pretty young girls," he remarked, "yet when it is finished I always find...

...Washington life when it seems as if the entire political class is conspiring to prove that the rules are...that there are no rules. The mayhem surrounding Newt Gingrich's ethical problems has that feel to it. In the past few weeks all the important lines of law and decorum have been crossed--by Gingrich, by House Republicans and Democrats, and above all by the members of the ethics committee charged with keeping those lines neat and tidy. ...even clearer when we see the diversification of the university as an extension of the degradation of public culture. The impetus for both is democracy, which aims to secure immediate validation for all possible experiences, including the most vacuous, lurid and debauching. As pornography, crudeness, and sensationalism erode public decorum, great pressure bears on the university to follow suit--to become indiscriminate, to refrain from judging and to take everything...
