...Opposition is wrapped up in a deep sense of moral rectitude about the process by which the decisions were made and then communicated to applicants. If only the College had made up its mind sooner, then perhaps the time, energy, and money that applicants put into their application might not have been wasted. Opponents cite the costs of re-taking standardized tests and ordering transcripts, which won’t be recouped by prospective transfers, even though Harvard has agreed to refund the full application...

...There is certainly a sense of wan amusement in watching America’s sharpest young minds lining up scores-deep in order to secure a minute of monitored levitation. Now and then a muddling passerby will accidentally wander into the swing’s ambit and, after a tussle of shouts, duck for safety. All are sharply lit before a deep black background, the simplest products of creation, not just seen but beheld, and summoning us from the darkness. What should we make of the mysterious gravity in these pictures? Perhaps just that in fiercely religious Spain, even a cabbage could be God's anointed messenger...

...union made sense in the palm tree-lined, perfectly manicured estate (read: castle) of the former Christian Brothers Winery. But take the philosophy home; bring it back to Bell Buckle, Tennessee or Garfield, Arkansas. How well does nutritional advice hold up in the face of a deep-fried Twinkie or country-fried steak? In neighborhoods where residents have to take two buses to get to the nearest supermarket, how realistic is a recipe for beet salad with farro and crumbled gorgonzola? Even growing up in New York City, my unrepresentative taste buds were apparent—I remember discovering...
