After the Sanctus and Benedictus, the concert closed on the final part of the Mass, the Agnus Dei. Antony Pay's flawless clarinet solos blended well with the alternating vocal sections, and a distinctive period horn sound, in some very well played passages, filled out the instrumental solo sections. The combination of orchestra, chorus, solo vocal and solo instrumental lines in this final piece created a very pleasing sense of unity to end the concert. The only real problem with the program was that with only 60 minutes of music, it was not enough...
...Harvard Glee Club joined for the Vaughan Williams Mass. The "Kyrie" initially sounded thin and tentative, lacking in emotion or conviction. However, the combined choirs suddenly burst out in their full glory in the "Gloria," with the rich, warm sound that distinguishes the Holden choirs. Likewise, the "Agnus Dei" was developed beautifully both melodically and harmonically. It was particularly impressive that the two groups, which do not rehearse together on a regular basis, were able to blend so well. In the same vein, it is a tribute to the excellence of both groups that the male voices did not overshadow...

Hundreds of people line the streets with cameras and video cameras, smiling and screaming compliments at the deity. People are waving from their balconies above. It reminds one of Queen Elizabeth's royal visits to Commonwealth countries and the receptions she gets. But whereas ERII is merely dei gratia regina--Queen by the grace of God--Michelle is dea, Goddess, and will not stop (stoop?) to receive the bouquets of flowers from little girls.
