...encourage citizens to stick to the city's famously clean public water. Salt Lake City's mayor has asked public employees to stop supplying bottled water at municipal events. And a few top-flight restaurants that once would never have dreamed of serving tap are ditching the bottles. At Del Posto, Mario Batali's newest spot in Manhattan, entrées can cost more than $40, but the restaurant isn't interested in adding environmental cost--it will soon stop selling bottled water. Co-owner Joseph Bastianich says the Italian restaurant will instead serve diners its kitchen's purified tap water...

Malaga, on the Costa del Sol, in romantic Andalusia, home to Antonio Banderas and the capital of one of Spain's most sophisticated resort areas, is also a city where bullfights hold a hallowed place. Every August the feasts bring thousands of bullfighting fans to the Plaza de Toros. But this year, the bullfights are also bringing in something more. On August 11 the pro-animal rights group Andalusian Collective Against Animal Mistreatment (CACMA, according to its Spanish initials), will stage the first demonstration ever in Malaga against this most popular and gory of Spain's traditions...

Whatever it was that went "poof" at an entrance to the Sears outlet in the Plaza del Valle Mall in Oaxaca City was certainly not big enough to be called a "bomb." It did damage to the door and a couple of glass panes but an "explosive artifact" was the most threatening term local law enforcement were willing use to describe it. Sears and the 116 other stores in the mall quickly reopened. And yet, the Mexican Army was out in force outside the department store all day, looking stern and watchful yet all the while saying that there...

BANK OF THE SOUTH First the Paul Wolfowitz scandal, and now this: at the end of the month, "Banco del Sur" will launch as a direct competitor to the World Bank, at least in South America. The brainchild of Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, who has long railed against the meddling of the Washington-dominated World Bank and IMF, the development bank got a credibility boost when Brazil, Argentina and others signed on as founding members. With the region's new oil wealth, the dream of locally funding big infrastructure projects without First World interference may be closer than ever...

...personality cult hasn't hurt the company either. Headquartered in an old warehouse on the Christiana River in Wilmington, Del., ING Direct projects a Silicon Valleyesque energy and idealism that come straight from the top. Consider the Orange Code, a manifesto of sorts penned by Kuhlmann and chief operating officer Jim Kelly, which includes lines like "We aren't conquerors. We are pioneers." Kuhlmann rants about spend-happy Americans and the companies that feed their addiction by selling them credit cards--"the opium of consumerism." When the rest of the banking industry lobbied for a new bankruptcy...
