Meanwhile, the Thakore Saheb stalled for time. The 29-year-old ruler certainly did not want to be responsible for the Mahatma's death. In no less a pickle was the British Government. Congress Governments made what political capital they could by wiring New Delhi that if Gandhi died, Britain would have to answer for the consequences. Britain did not want to have a dead Gandhi on its hands, but, if Britain gave in on this point and forced the Thakore Saheb to reform his government, a bad precedent would be set. Last week the rural broadcasting scheme revived when the Government installed receiving sets in 120 villages of the 573-sq.-mi. Delhi district. The princes are afraid that if they join the All-India Federation their states will be overrun with radical Gandhi Congressmen and preachers of sedition, with or without violence. The Indian National Congress, which opposes Federation tooth & nail, is afraid that if the native states are permitted to come in under the Constitution the entire All-India Federation will be a setup so rigid that it may take generations to overthrow the Rajas, Maharajas and Nawabs...
