Like The Nasty Girl from Germany, Toto le Heros from Belgium and Delicatessen from France, Zentropa finds movie energy in spiritual malaise. These films take their cue from the dystopic visions of Blade Runner and Brazil -- pictures set in the future but cluttered with decor from the film noir past. The imagery possesses a kind of dour voluptuousness: bleak and busy. Their crammed, skewed compositions excite the eye. These movies won't push Lethal 3 off the multiplex screen; they can't compete with Hollywood product. And that is the happy point. They are appealingly strange -- different from the American...
...time is half-past the Apocalypse in the inventive French comedy DELICATESSEN, but the setting has the look of Gallic movies from the grungy- romantic '30s. Everything else is, well, different. Meat is scarce here, so the piggy butcher serves chopped humans to his customers -- who may soon be his victims. A housewife bent on suicide rigs up a dozen Rube Goldberg devices of destruction. Underground, an army of inept "Troglodists" (sort of Middle- Age Mutant Dingy Frogmen) plots revolution. And a nice guy in clown shoes hopes the butcher's myopic daughter will see the goodness in his heart...

They cower under the threatening influence of an ominously absent boss named Barney as Rob discloses piecemeal the play's central concerns. Among these are the presence of a mysterious and impenetrable room "behind the back room" of the deli, which he spends most of his time trying to infiltrate; a violent "occurrence" which resulted in the disappearance of the deli's previous employees; and the undisclosed identity...
...JEWS, scrawled one boy. GO BACK TO YOUR OWN COUNTRY, wrote another. After squirting the house with blue paint, a fourth boy, Tony sprayed a swastika on the car of Saul Shaw, a 79-year-old Jew who lives a few blocks away. Markovitz's temple and a kosher delicatessen were also barraged. That was 1988, but for the next two years the aftermath of these hate crimes continued to roil the complacency of this lily-white suburb and its 75,000 residents...
...most popular hangouts of the day proved to be Elsie's Delicatessen on the corner of Holyoke and Mt. Auburn Sts. One worker at Elsie's said that in the past few days, the sandwich shop has been deluged with alumni coming in and ordering what they used to 50 years...
