When I was in elementary school, I used to drool while watching my Gentile and assimilated Jewish friends greedily remove any one of the multitude of Hostess cakes from their "Dukes of Hazzard" lunchboxes and quickly gorge themselves upon the cream filled delights. It seemed to me that, like the cartoon commercial claimed--everyone got "A big delight out of every bite of Hostess Cupcakes." That tempting creamy middle really did seem to revitalize all those lucky enough to devour it, and gave them the requisite sugar rush they needed to conquer the playset from the older, more powerful second...

She also has a wonderful speech recalling her only romantic love, a carnival worker who drowned before her eyes when a partying crowd onshore mistook his desperate pleas for habitual clowning. Amid the grim reality, McPherson's characters take childlike delight in simple things and maintain a giggly sense of humor. Bessie's father Marvin, unseen but for his shadow through a glass-brick wall, has been dying for two decades -- "real slow," Bessie explains with a hint of asperity, "so I don't miss anything." He still chortles in glee...

Indeed, I should think Landry would agree that this is well overdue. Or I'm sure Robert K. Wasinger would delight in giving his depraved readers more vivid swimming sperm imagery to expose the evils of such unorthodox practices as oral sex, between (gasp) heterosexuals...
