...MOUND--Had the Giants not just played a three game play-off, pitching superiority would automatically be ceded to them. Jack Sanford (22-7), Juan Marichal (13-10), Billy O'Dell (19-14), and Billy Pierce (13-6) give them a great foursome of starters, and Stu Miller, Don Larsen, and Mike McCormick are more than adequate in relief. Against this lineup put Whitey Ford (17-8), Ralph Terry (23-12), Bill Stafford (14-9) and Bud Daley (5-3). Pretty obvious who's better. Marshall Bridges (3.17 ERA) is one of the best reliefers in the business...
Juan Marichal, Billy O'Dell, and Jack Sanford are all strong starters but all too often weak finishers. Behind the starters, Giant relief pitching is not up to past standards. Stu Miller isn't as sharp as he used to be, and Don Larsen, having abandoned the search for another perfect game, is still groping for competence...

He noted down a good deal of the comic byplay; but, just as certainly, he intended the performance to be decked out with a lot of improvised farce, in the tradition of the Italian commedia dell'arte, for which French Baroque court circles had an overwhelming passion...
...Commedia dell'arte features abound in this play, and director Samuel Hirsch and costumer Phil Robb were quick to emphasize the connections. It would of course be too much to expect the players to have evolved a really consistent style of ensemble comedy in a few weeks, but the current production is more than adequate, and three of the performances are top-notch. (I do, however, miss in the updated translation the wonderful old repertory of varied expletives that pepper the text...
