When the oracle of Delphi said that Socrates was the wisest man in Athens, Socrates was incredulous. His ignorance, after all, was just as great as his fellow Athenians. However, what set Socrates apart was that he knew he was ignorant. When the graduates join the “company of educated men and women” next month, will they know just how ignorant they are? And more importantly, will they want to do something about...

Parasite infestation is another chronic problem of high-density seafood farms. One of the most damaging organisms is the sea louse, which breeds by the millions in the vicinity of captive salmon. In 1989 Peter Mantle, who owns a wild salmon and sea-trout sport fishery in Delphi on the west coast of Ireland, discovered that young trout returning to his river from the ocean were covered with lice that were boring through the trouts' skin and feasting on their flesh. The sea lice were breeding near newly installed salmon farms in the inlet fed by his river...

Similar dire notices came last week in industries as diverse as health insurance (Aetna), semiconductors (Applied Materials) and automotive products (Delphi). But most tours allow for the differing energy and attention levels of the eight-year-old and the 80-year-old. When Familyhostel's tour of Greece reaches Delphi, reports director Robert McCaffery, the kids run to the top of the hill and around the stadium, working off energy, while the grandparents absorb history at ground level. Still, as Elderhostel's Richard Harris says, "any grandparent may find a whole week in charge of a child pretty exhausting...

...Juarez is growing up across town from the old colonias, partly the result of a public-private partnership. Delphi joined Mexico's federal-housing agency in a project to build affordable homes (from $15,000 to $18,000 each) in safe neighborhoods as little as 15 minutes by bus from the plants. The program has helped cut Delphi's employee turnover from as high as 10% a month to 1.2% a year--and put newlyweds Giron and his wife Tania, via Delphi's employee savings plan, into a two-bedroom bungalow with a modern kitchen and interior, done in beige...
