...grenade launchers; above the "gunships" circle jet fighter-bombers armed with searing napalm, white phosphorous and bomblets that can unleash deadly patterns of tiny steel pellets. In no other war has American weaponry so quickly matched the demands of a difficult tactical terrain. From the swamps of the Mekong Delta, where 30-ft. patrol boats packed with unsinkable plastic foam whisk along on water jets, to the shell-pocked "Rockpile" below the Demilitarized Zone, where six-barreled Ontos tracked vehicles rumble, the arsenal last week was in awesome action...
...question: "Are you sterile?" Grinned Comedienne Martha Raye, 50: "At my age, you better believe it." Even the wounded G.I. managed to smile at that crack. It was the sort of thing Martha kept up all through the long night at the field hospital at Soctrang in the Mekong Delta as she gave her finest performance since arriving in South Viet Nam last month for her third visit to the troops. Heavy casualties had been airlifted into Soctrang from a withering battle several miles away, and Martha, who was at the base to do a show, immediately donated a pint...
...Slam" Marshall is right! With notable exceptions, the press and television are doing a miserable job of reporting meaningful facts in Viet Nam. Columbia University students skip the hose for Manhattan theater dates, and at Berkeley, when Theta Delta Chi threw a party, nearly all of the brothers turned up sockless. Maintains Theta Delt David Greenlee, 20: "When you walk down Telegraph among all the beatniks, and you're wearing a pullover sweater and Daks and no socks, it shows a relaxed attitude...
Newcomers or old hands, the women are frequent visitors to the front lines, where reaction to their presence is varied. When one of the women turned up at the headquarters of a Marine fighter squadron in the Mekong Delta, the C.O. gave her a curt order: "You'll wear fatigues all the time. We don't want women with legs down here." Out in the boondocks, another one of the girls was greeted by a battle-weary Army sergeant who asked quietly: "Will you please just say something? I haven't heard an American woman speak...
