FROM THE BEGINNING, the meeting of Europe and America was colored by illusions. Columbus retreated from the Orinoco delta because he thought he had found the Earthly Paradise; Coronado chased across the deserts in search of seven golden cities; Ponce de Leon died in pursuit of the Fountain of Youth. The Indians were just as perplexed, believing at first that the conquistadors on horseback were centaurs, and later that these red-bearded, pale-skinned men were gods returning to fulfill an apocalyptic prophecy...

...idealism of Italy's return to democracy. Many of its leaders had been persecuted by Mussolini's Fascists, and served in the Resistance; their return to power seemed to usher in a genuinely liberal, reformist era. For example, in the brooding, once impoverished Polesine, the Po River delta south of Venice, the Christian Democrats were able to wrest power from the Marxists by pressing a vigorous land-to-the-tillers program. The party spent lavishly on flood control, construction of barns and houses, and equipment for mechanized farming. It is now a longer process often involving face-to-face easy-chair conversation between penitent and priest (TIME, March 15), although those who prefer it can retain the anonymity of the old screened confessional. Says Lee Roach, 41, a Delta Air Lines pilot and usher at St. Jude's parish in Sandy Springs, Ga.: "We're encouraged to examine our motives. Now, when you go to confession, the priest may ask you, 'Do you believe you were sinning? Was it a turning away from...

Perched in the nose of a Delta rocket, one of the simplest satellites ever built by the U.S. roared off the launch pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base last week to begin an 8 million-year journey in space. The 2-ft. sphere, placed into a 3,600-mile-high circular orbit, contains no moving parts or electronic equipment and resembles an oversized golf ball. Yet it should provide earthbound geophysicists with a benchmark in the sky that will enable them to measure precisely the rotation rate of the earth and the wobble of its axis, continental drift...

...Aeronautics Board permission to boost their fares even higher, arguing plausibly that operating costs are still rising faster than revenues. The major lines, which complain that Government has dragged its feet on granting fare hikes, have recently won a 3% across-the-board increase, and last week all but Delta were back in Washington seeking a further 2% rise. More rate-boost requests are almost certain. Eastern Chief Frank Borman figures that fares will have to go up at least another 6% this year "to get us back toward a reasonable 12% return on investment." The lines also expect...
