With ghoulish predictability, Versace merchandise was flying out of the stores last week, following the murder. But even in the long term, the demand for Versace brands seems likely to continue. "Versace's team knows how to do the look," says Kal Ruttenstein, the fashion director at Bloomingdale's, pointing out that sales of Versace merchandise at his company's stores have been "all on the uprise." Attitudes like that bode well for the future of the House That Versace Built...
Meanwhile, just to the north of Denver is Greeley, site of the state's school of education, strong-boned churches and the richly landscaped homes of Colorado's Front Range technocrats. Yet for the fiscal year that ended June 30, the demand for emergency food in Greeley shot...
Hunger in America in times of plenty? Parke Hinman, who runs a food bank in Montgomery, Ala., has seen demand rise to include families with wage earners. But, he says, "if we can provide them food...
...delegation arrived for preliminary discussions. "We will not negotiate with anyone who supports violence and who are associated with any group which retained the means of inflicting violence upon others for the attainment of political objectives," party leader Robert McCartney said. The IRA adamantly refuses to meet the Protestant demand that it unconditionally disarm itself. While this sticking point may ruin yet another truce, British Prime Minister Tony Blair is determined to convince pro-British Protestants that holding talks with Sinn Fein is in their best interest...
