...listened hard, he could have heard environmentalists and Democrats grinding their teeth in opposition. As McCain repeats his drilling mantra, critics point out that there is far too little untapped oil in American waters to make a significant difference in gas prices, especially considering the vast and growing global demand for petrol. Besides, "drilling now," as McCain says, won't yield results for years, and offshore exploration still has serious environmental risks. (That last point was underscored by the timing of McCain's visit - his rig trip was delayed because of a hurricane and oil spill in the Gulf...
...scale of the energy and climate crisis facing America and the rest of the world. (Indeed, the other 6.3 billion people factor into this equation too.) The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently estimated that under a business-as-usual scenario - which the U.S. seems intent on abiding - global oil demand would rise 70% by 2050. That increase represents five times as much oil as Saudi Arabia produces annually. You could drill America with exploratory wells until it looked like Swiss cheese and still not make much of a dent in that figure...

On both sides of the Atlantic, now, governments are castigating Russia and demanding that it make good on its promise to withdraw its forces from Georgia, but that apparent consensus can't hide the deep divisions within the Atlantic Alliance over how to respond to a resurgent Russia. "An uncoordinated mess," is how Robin Shepherd, head of the European program at Chatham House, the London-based think tank, described Europe's response to Russia's incursion into Georgia on Aug. 7. "There is complete...
Ultimately, however, the global demand for oil and gas is so great that it is difficult to see any South American country passing up the potential revenue in favor of keeping the Amazon pristine. It's also a reminder that, as we fight over a little offshore drilling in the U.S., rising energy prices will impact far more vulnerable ecosystems overseas, from the Amazon in South America to the vast Arctic stretches of Siberia. For now, the best we might be able to expect - until alternative fuels make oil and gas unnecessary - is adherence to the best safety standards...
...Amid fears about the potential risks of hosting the silos, Poland persistently pressed the U.S. to boost Polish air defenses with cash and equipment supplies, such as long-range Patriot batteries. In announcing the deal, Prime Minister Tusk explained that Washington had accepted Warsaw's "key demand, the presence of Patriots...
