Here's a modest proposal. As Kennedy notes, the main reason blacks use the N word among themselves is to take away its power to hurt and demean when white people hurl it at them. But when whites try to use it in the ways blacks do, it falls flat because it lacks authenticity. So, instead of copycatting black slang, it would make more sense for white would-be hipsters to demonstrate a little originality by calling themselves slurs that blacks have used to demean white people, such as cracker, honky or ofay. They could even give the epithets...
...less attractive women Hal sees once his appearance-blind hypnosis wears off. Instead, we get actresses whose idealized bodies and faces have been altered with fat suits and prosthetic noses. This may simply be due to the nature of the roles—why an overweight woman would demean herself by playing one of these characters is beyond me. Nevertheless, the obvious “uglification” of female cast members lends no authority to the filmmakers’ alleged attempt to satirize American pop culture’s insistence on seeing only perfect faces and bodies...
...understand that this cartoon was intended as some sort of joke, but the implications inherent in such a representation demean and objectify women nonetheless. Presumably a woman's head could not possibly signify the requisite intellectual capacity to be president of Harvard; it seems that all of our icons of genius are male. The objectification of a female, anorexic body sprawled across the pages of a supposedly serious newspaper is even more unconscionable...
Gambling is a desperate attempt to demean my co-workers through false bravado about things that I don't even care about. All this time, I haven't been betting in order to win money; the money is simply a prop to hold over the loser's head while I take a picture of myself smiling. So now, instead, I will resort to more economical ways of humiliating people. Like printing that Josh has recurring dreams about riding on a motorcycle with Shaquille O'Neal. I'm feeling much better already...
Religion does play a very large role in the lives of many Americans, and it is usually a positive one. To say that does not demean atheists, or imply that one cannot be moral without religion. It is like saying that caring parents or close friends play a large positive role in the lives of many Americans. A person who grew up without either can still become a productive, happy and gentle member of society. By the same token, many people who had both kind parents and close friends will fail the test of life...
