Antony and Cleopatra is a devilishly difficult play to put on convincingly. To begin with, the imagery applied to the two lovers has an Olympian grandeur that somewhat dwarfs merely mortal actors. Antony is "the triple pillar of the world" and an erstwhile demigod in battle. When he dies, Cleopatra says "the odds is gone"-meaning that the world has lost its prime measure of greatness...
...from the 1923 Yankees (World Series winners that year) were on hand-Waite Hoyt, "Jumping Joe" Dugan, Hinkey Haines, Whitey Witt and Oscar Roettger. The youthful crowd greeted the old heroes with no more than polite applause and saved the biggest ovation for Mickey Mantle, the most nearly contemporary demigod introduced. Because of his recent television commercials, many of them probably identify him more with coffee and a savings bank than with baseball...
...country since the Communist takeover a year ago, announced that Sihanouk had resigned as chief of state, even though he had been reconfirmed in that post by the National Assembly on March 20. Today, wherever Rostropovich plays, tickets sell out within hours. Only one week after he announced his decision to defect, the National Symphony chose Rostropovich to succeed their outgoing musical director and conductor...
Threatening Demigod. The palace, which was officially reopened for the first time since Lon Nol's 1970 military takeover from Sihanouk, may not be occupied for long. Though the Prince is formally Chief of State of the Royal Government of the National Union of Cambodia, his function within the Khmer Rouge government will probably be very limited. Revered in the countryside not merely as a monarch but as a Buddhist demigod, Sihanouk could become a serious political threat to the newly entrenched Communist leadership. His return was brokered by the Chinese, who are vying with North Viet...
