Klein's column was right on the mark. It is amazing to me, a "Reagan Democrat," how quickly the U.S. electorate could forget President Bush's campaign positions that criticized the Clinton Administration's policy of "nation building." Isn't that precisely what Bush has us doing in Afghanistan and Iraq? As Klein said, democracy "demands that people take charge of their lives and make informed decisions." I hope Americans make informed decisions in the next elections...

...revolution, European politics has been reduced to a choice between technocratic solutions to social problems. (How can health-care costs be brought under control? How can the quality of secondary schools be improved?) Just as Cameron, though a Conservative, has positioned himself as Blair's true heir, so Christian Democrat Angela Merkel comfortably heads a German government in which some of the most important ministries are held by Social Democrats. Europe is living through the end of ideology - that same, well, sameness of beliefs among nominally distinct political groupings that Daniel Bell identified in the U.S. almost 50 years...

...Curiously disengaged" during the onset of the crisis is how Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins depicted Chertoff; she also wondered why he took a trip to Atlanta rather than directing the effort from Washington. Minnesota Democrat Mark Dayton called DHS under Chertoff's leadership "non-functional," while Collins chose "late," "uncertain, "ineffective," "alarming" and "unacceptable" to define the agency's performance. Minnesota Republican Norm Coleman said Chertoff "failed the President" by not informing him of the doubts he had about then-Federal Emergency Management Agency head Michael Brown. The "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job" comment came...

McCain also caught a break last week when James Webb, Navy Secretary under Ronald Reagan, announced he would run as a Democrat against Republican Senator George Allen of Virginia. Allen had hoped to have only token opposition in his re-election bid this year, making it possible for him to also build the machinery for a 2008 presidential run. But with the charismatic Webb as a possible opponent, Allen will have to stick close to home...

...conspicuously paying respect to their experience. After his term began, he met with more than a dozen Senators, including Clinton and Ted Kennedy, to seek their advice. In weekly breakfast meetings for Illinois residents visiting Washington, Obama spends much of his time deferring to Illinois' other Senator, assistant Democratic leader Dick Durbin. Obama tells the tourists they should direct their questions to Durbin, "the second most powerful Democrat in the Senate," a man who is "working on every bill." Says California Senator Barbara Boxer, a Democrat: "It's nice to see someone that young, that talented, show humility...
