Union PACs favor Democrats over Republicans by a ratio of about 12 to 1. By contrast, the corporate donations this year were split about equally between Democrats and Republicans. Most of the money went to incumbents with lots of seniority. Says John Bonitt, head of Bendix Corp.'s PAC: "That's where the committee chairmen are." Louisiana Democrat J. Bennett Johnston, who heads Senate subcommittees on energy and appropriations, received at least $192,000 from about 190 PACs, though he had only token opposition in the primary and none in the general election. Why so much support? Says...
Despite the Shah's widespread unpopularity, there were indications last week that some of his opponents might still be willing to reach some kind of compromise with him. After his release from detention, National Front Leader Sanjabi, 73, a social democrat, denied speculation that he might help form a coalition government; this would be impossible, he said, under "existing conditions." He proceeded to describe Sunday's mass demonstration in Tehran as a "referendum in the streets" that would lead, he hoped, to a "true referendum to determine the kind of government Iran is to have...
...investigation of the claims against Charles Engelhard reveals that he is more of a tool than a symbol. In fact, George Croft of The Boston Globe (Oct. 25, 1978, page 70) reports that Charles Engelhard was actually a liberal Democrat who was also a liberal on apartheid! Mr. Croft adds that Mr. Engelhard was a close friend of Presidents Kennedy and Johnson and served as a personal representative of the White House at the coronation of Pope Paul VI and at the Independence Day celebrations in two Africa countries: Gabon and Zambia. Mr. Croft also quoted from a speech Engelhard...
...task of removing the bodies from Guyana and embalming them was expensive, but the Government would not yet predict the total costs. The fact that U.S. taxpayers were bearing the cost upset at least two Congressmen, Illinois Republican Philip Crane and Rhode Island Democrat Edward Beard. They publicly protested the use of federal funds (unofficial estimates of the cost have run as high as $8 million) to transport and process the decayed remains. Said Crane: "Although the entire situation is deplorable, the responsibility to bring the loved ones back to the United States rests with the families, not the Federal...
...push the minimum age up to 19. Concern about youthful boozing is similarly an issue in Massachusetts, which went to 18 in 1973. Bay State legislators voted to go to 19 last July, but then-Governor Michael Dukakis refused to sign the bill into law. His successor, Conservative Democrat Edward King, believes that his tough stand in favor of raising the age helped him get Dukakis...
