...current climate of fear, there's good reason to think before speaking. Just ask Sen. Charles Schumer. In June the New York Democrat warned that mortgage lender IndyMac Bancorp was on the brink of collapse. His remarks, regulators say, caused a run by depositors that helped bring down IndyMac. Schumer rejected that assertion, saying blaming him is like blaming the fire on the guy who calls...

...Finding a balance between secrecy and disclosure is a tricky business, as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid discovered on Oct. 1. After the Democrat from Nevada emerged from a luncheon on Capitol Hill, he spoke briefly to reporters about the financial crisis, mentioning that another insurance company was in danger of following AIG into failure. "One of the individuals in the caucus today talked about a major insurance company - a major insurance company, one with a name that everyone knows - that's on the verge of going bankrupt," Reid said. The Oregon Democrat has accused Palin of a "major contradiction" between her support for gas exports and campaign emphasis on more drilling to slake US energy needs. "It's pretty outrageous to scare Americans about energy shortages while she has been approving export of billions of cubic feet of natural gas that could be providing energy to homes in Alaska and the lower 48 states," he said...

...Moore distributed ramen noodles and clean underwear to consistent nonvoters in the hopes that their support would sway the election against incumbent George W. Bush. The narrative of the film begins straightforwardly. The opening scenes recount the effects of the “Swift Boat” attacks on Democrat John Kerry’s campaign. Ominous music plays as the words, “This is the story of one filmmaker’s failed attempt to turn things around” appear onscreen. Yet the documentary loses direction with startling celerity. Gone is the Michael Moore who sharply...
