...unique--and often contagious--standards. The sage of the tax revolt, touchstone of the most important social and economic movement of our era, seemed to emerge half from central casting and half from the Bible--the prophet come to save a nation, live and in color. His Jeremiad condemned demon government and its lecherous grope for the tax dollar; the reverberations of Howard Jarvis's leap in the dark still echo today, as his spiritual brethren control the White House, the Senate, and apparently, the national conscience...

STEPHEN SONDHEIM'S Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street shocks like an amusement park's house of horrors, slitting the emotions and jangling open nerves, but the chill melts quickly and the musical ultimately fails. For his first stab at opera, Sondheim appropriated the hackneyed Victorian tale of Sweeney Todd, a barber who exacts revenge for his wife's death by slashing the throats of her murderers. The computer HAL not only operates the space ship and talks in a supercilious tenor but is so exalted by its own superiority ("I am incapable of making an error") that it starts killing the astronauts who interfere with its plans. In a 1976 MGM effort titled Demon Seed, a presumptuous robot goes even further and fulfills the sinful ambition of making Julie Christie pregnant. But then...
