...just why he has done it is still open to doubt. Supposing that Mr. Griffith is still capable of another "Birth of a Nation," it might be well for him to hunt around for a story. As it is he has gone to work with W.C. Fields, Carol Dempster and a lot of wind machines. It may be even possible that the wind machines were borrowed from other sets, because it seems impossible that a normal supply could create such a fiendish storm. Mr. Griffith doesn't content himself with a mere cyclone; he has to have three or four...

Here we are well into the second paragraph and we haven't said a serious word about Miss Dempster yet. She escaped from a Mary Pickford tendency to fight in the streets early in the picture, and acted with reasonable sanity and dignity from then on. She is really too lovely altogether to go clowning all over the screen with such a master of the jongoleur's art as W.C. Fields. Fields, by the way, contributes his own blundering broad-faced type of humor which this department has always enjoyed enormously. It is to be regretted that he falls...

If you do not think he is funny you had better have a thorough going over with a steam roller...

...seize the crop. They save a little money to buy beef and find the price has abruptly jumped beyond them. Sausage, presented by a rich American, they lose. Hand in hand at the end they are still happy. "Isn't Life Wonderful!" cry they. Neil Hamilton and Carol Dempster (cf. America) have the parts. So telling are their portraits that the director must be further commended. As postscript to this tribute must be added the opinion that the film will not be popular. So taken are the masses with tinsel imitations that simple sincerity must necessarily be tasteless...

...second part the Drama opens out, freeing itself from the strictness of absolute history, Nathan Holden--acted by Neil Hamilton, and Nancy Montague (Carol Dempster) hold the chief interest. Nell Hamilton proves by his work in this picture that he is worthy of being classed with the greatest of cinema actors. This film should make his fame, as "The Four Horsemen" made that of Rudolph Valentino. Then, besides the leading couple, Lionel Barrymore is effective as the cruel Captain Butler, who directs the Iroquois raids, and ravages the American outposts. About these three a rapidly shifting melodrama of death, pasion...
