Well, you wouldn't recognize the Rock once Gaunt sinks his teeth into it. The quiet little town where people drive Yugos and natter about Demi Moore turns into one hell of a burg. That's because the residents just can't stay away from needful things, buying stuff like folk medicine that mysteriously cures pain and cars that drive on no gas at all and just about anything else that can tempt greedy souls to trade away their most precious possession...

...relationships between men and women. The year's two top box-office winners, The Silence of the Lambs and Sleeping with the Enemy, dramatize the ( judicious revenge that a woman takes on a brutalizing man. In another new film, Alan Rudolph's dour and inept Mortal Thoughts, two women (Demi Moore and Glenne Headly) kill a hateful husband (Bruce Willis, who lately can't seem to get a break). The trend straddles oceans too: Luc Besson's stylish French thriller, La Femme Nikita, is about a woman (Anne Parillaud) whose romantic life conflicts with her career as an espionage...

...Demi Moore had the best role of 1990, if you multiply intensity of character by box-office impact. As the grieving widow in Ghost, Moore grounded the preposterous plot -- she gets a last chance to make love with her lost love -- and gave it resonance. Writing rushed in to fill the void that had been occupied by drugs. Her first sprawling demi-autobiographical outpourings were bound and ungagged between the covers of Postcards in 1987. The gist of the haywire parable is that fame and fortune are no shield; things can go very wrong in rich families with smart, talented people too. The book is less about the outlaw romance of drug abuse than about the process of picking up the pieces. She explains, "The facts don't change, just the fiction that you make up about them...

Most of the mystery of this movie lies in its attraction rather than its plot. The movie opens with yuppie couple Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) and Molly Jensen (Demi Moore) moving into one of those ridiculously large New York apartments that only people in movies can afford. They're happy, after their fashion--late at night, when Molly can't sleep, she shapes clay phallic symbols on her pottery wheel and Sam wakes up and helps her. Despite the fact his hands are caked with clay, he rubs her thighs. She gets all hot and bothered, and they dance...
