There is plenty of tame local color, including what must be some of the least erotic whorehouse sequences ever recorded in an R-rated film. Unlike Novelist Theroux, Bogdanovich does not have a particularly keen descriptive eye; he goes for tourist snapshots instead of true grit. Except for Denholm Elliott, who offers a fastidious portrait of a typically down-and-out British colonial, the actors do little to help the proceedings. Disney's craftsmen might have made better visual definitions of characters-it's sometimes hard to tell one cottontail from another -but the vocal characterizations by such English worthies as Ralph Richardson, Harry Andrews and Denholm Elliott are never confusing. Almost everyone involved with Robin and Marian could be a champion. One thinks immediately of the model supporting cast: Richard Harris as Richard Lionheart, Denholm Elliott as Will Scarlett, Ian Holm as King John, Kenneth Haigh as the duplicitous Sir Ranulf. There is also the ravishing cinematography of David Watkin, who makes Sherwood into a forest well suited to legend. Particularly there is Sean Connery's Robin Hood, Nicol Williamson's Little John, Robert Shaw's winter-eyed Sheriff, Audrey Hepburn's Maid Marian-and Richard Lester, a film maker of deft wit and frequent brilliance...
