...competition for sovereignty heated up this summer even as the ice cap shrank, at an ever-accelerating pace, to an alarming new minimum. There it was Russia and its jingoistic jaunt in August to the Arctic Ocean floor at the North Pole that inspired Canada, the United States, Denmark and Norway to freshen up their own claims to the Arctic. Considerable - but still largely uncharted - oil and gas deposits are the attraction, and they become ever more enticing as prices for petroleum soar and exploitation technology improves...

...enlist Philippe Avanzi, one of France's leading interior designers, to develop a strategy to give 6,000-odd outlets across Europe a face-lift. Avanzi and McDonald's, in turn, engaged the services of one of the world's most highly regarded furniture producers, Fritz Hansen of Denmark, to supply chairs designed by legendary Danish Modernist Arne Jacobsen. ...some time before Minikel and Balle start that process. They had planned on her moving to Denmark to take advantage of a government program designed to draw much needed doctors. But last July, Minikel was promoted at her U.S. hospital to the coveted post of residency director. So in October, Balle will visit for five weeks--the longest stretch they've ever spent together. She hopes he'll eventually move to the Bay Area. For now, they're keeping their passports handy...
