...power, there was a single address for complaints and demands. Musharraf leaves behind something of a power vacuum, in which authority is necessarily more diffuse. Indeed, General Pervez Musharraf's journey from military command to the presidency was a symptom of Pakistan's malaise, not its cause. He may depart from the scene, but the conflicts and contradictions that elevated him and then brought him down remain far from resolved...
...Greenland ice cap, some hundreds of kilometers from anything - was less fun. Our ride was a Hercules C-130 cargo plane, which also delivered provisions to the camp, as air travel is about the only way to get on and off the ice cap. It was scheduled to depart Kangerlussuaq at about 6 a.m., which required our group to be out of the hotel by 4:30 in the morning. Getting up at 3:45 a.m., I experienced something entirely new after seven years of international reporting: yo-yo jet lag. Two days ago, I flew six time zones ahead...
...excuse here. Weather in Greenland is changeable, and even in the summer, hardly perfect for flying. It's not unusual for flights to be delayed for hours, even canceled altogether, sometimes stranding people on the ice cap for days at a time. Berlin is also where the only major public event of the trip is scheduled: a speech before what are expected to be tens of thousands at the Victory Tower in the Tiergarten. Campaign officials have been sensitive about the characterization of that event, insisting that it is a substantive foreign policy address, though given German enthusiasm for Obama, the atmosphere is expected to look more...
...laid off when mainland Hawaii, once the biggest sugar producer in the chain of islands, stopped growing cane. High production and transportation costs, as well as compliance with the state's strict environmental standards, had proved too costly, prompting the island's two sugar companies to depart. No industry replaced those jobs, and "it's been years trying to recover" from the loss, says Roney, now director of economics and policy analysis for the American Sugar Alliance. "I think this will be a very difficult adjustment for the workers in the town of Clewiston," he adds. "Agriculture really...
