The scholar, Claudia D. Goldin, said in an interview last night that she would probably accept the offer from the Economics Department--if the terms of the contract are favorable.
Goldin, whose latest book Understanding the Gender Gap: An Economic History of American Women will be released in January, said she plans to visit the University later this month to meet department members and discuss a possible contract with Dean of the Faculty A. Michael Spence.
But the Treasury Department, through Rep. Chalmers Wylie of Ohio, senior Republican on the House Banking Committee, promptly distanced itself from the latest proposal involving the troubled savings industry in which a post-Depression record of more than 200 insolvent institutions were closed last year.
Wylie, who said he spoke after his office conferred with the Treasury Department, said Brady will present the plan to President-elect Bush by about February 15.
The two students were given the Philip Hofer Prize in Collecting, a new award created in honor of the late Philip Hofer '21, founder and first curator of the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts in the Houghton Library and secretary of the Fogg Art Museum.
