House mice do pose a health threat, but not one as serious as some have suggested, according to Gary D. Alpert '81, entomology officer in Harvard's Environmental Health and Safety Department.
Alpert said his department provides both traditional and more humane mouse traps.
But Flynn said the department raised the fine to discourage motorists--particularly Harvard staff, faculty and students--from leaving their cars in Cambridge street spaces for extended hours.
"What surprised the students was the ferocityof the government's response, not the crackdownitself," said Huang Yashang, a doctoral candidateat Harvard's Government Department who alsowitnessed the uprising.
