...slight for football, he concentrated on golf, somewhat to the exclusion of grades. Then he went off to small, nearby DePauw University, where he played more golf, joined the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and earned grades so mediocre (a D in his major, political science) that 13 years later, the faculty initially voted to deny him an honorary degree, although it subsequently reversed itself...

...DEPAUW. "Nine years ago, when we hired Dick Rosser as president, DePauw was slipping," says Eugene Delves, trustee chairman of the small (2,350) private university in Greencastle, Ind. Not anymore. DePauw is described in the latest edition of a leading college guide as "now clearly on its way back up." A prime source of the uplift has been money, in record amounts. School officials have ticketed the interest from $43 million for student aid, and have available the interest from an additional $30 million from the endowment. Curran, 22, has completed a six-month ( internship with Eli Lilly & Co. in Indianapolis...

That applies to the students as well. Lisa Yen, 19, a senior in Indianapolis last year, had her choice of Yale, Princeton, Indiana University and DePauw. Says she: "I really wanted to go to Yale, but DePauw gave me a big scholarship to enter their management fellows program." The program, which combines liberal arts with a semester-long paid internship at a FORTUNE 500 company, is one reason that DePauw's applications have gone up 30% in the past six years. At Tufts University, Admissions Dean Michael Behnke occasionally gets a call from a prospective student confessing that another...
