...conducting almost nightly raids on Israeli border outposts, the fedayeen often depend on artillery cover from regular Arab army troops. In the event of a ceasefire, the Arab governments presumably would withhold that tactical support, as Jordan's King Hussein last week ordered his troops to do. But the guerrillas could still shower Israel from three countries with their small-arms fire and with rockets and mortars. Israelis who live in settlements near the Jordanian, Syrian and Lebanese frontiers will almost certainly have to continue sleeping in shelters, even after a formal cease-fire begins...

Falsely, perhaps, Soviet authorities had felt they could depend on the Kronstadt sailors to uphold the gains of the Bolshevik victory. Inveterate enemies of Tsarist autocracy, the sailors had risen decisively against both Nicholas and the mildly reformist Provisional Government. They had propelled the Communists to victory at the Winter Palace, and the valiant support which they rendered the fledgling regime during the stormy days after the October insurrection had prompted Minister of War Leon Trotsky to hail them as "the pride and glory of the revolution...

The youth rebellion crashed the old-guard fashion stockades by putting it all together (often out of trunks and thrift-shop...

More than 20 different highly speculative theories of aging are now being tested in scientific laboratories round the world. The method or methods by which the human life-span will be extended depend on which of these theories turns out to be correct. Some of them have to do with genetic engineering-attempts to alter the program of the cell by changing the coding on the DNA molecule. But nongenetic theories will probably pay off sooner. One current favorite holds that aging occurs because certain giant molecules in human cells eventually get bound together. These immobile aggregations clog the cells...

...final success of the campaign will depend on how the promises match the performance. The ads imply that better service is imminent. Yet much of the money being spent by the system is not for improving existing service; it is to meet the needs of increased demand. Only Palm Springs, for example, has pushbutton dialing, and advanced electronic switching systems will not be in operation until 1973. Until these and other improvements are made, the company and its customers are likely to remain disconnected...
