...decision pushes Simpson's potential financial obligation to a whopping $33.5 million. That's significantly more than the $15.7 million the plaintiffs had asked for, and left Simpson lawyers swearing that there was no way their client could ever pay up. Whether or not he does will first depend on Judge Hiroshi Fujisaki, who has 110 days to approve or reduce the amount of the award. ...fantastically wealthy "non-profit" corporation can easily keep workers like Hickey without sacrificing the future of the University. Harvard should face up to the truth--it is unnecessarily hoarding cash at the expense of people, like Hickey, who depend on the money for their livelihood. When the current students graduate and are hounded by Harvard for contributions, they should reflect upon its insatiable greed, and they should give their money to a worthier cause. Part of the joke here is that Spoon and Stretch, who are less performance artists than petty criminals, suffer from welfare-state dependency. And in Michigan, this is the wrong state to depend on. Public servants are ignorant or lazy or just plain crazy. But Spoon and Stretch aren't your ideal victims. Their signature act of social aggression is to smoke cigarettes in government offices. Their way of bonding...
