Primary among these was the aging, decrepit but still majestic Bela Lugosi. Martin Landau does a handsome turn as Lugosi -- so strong that when he disappears, Ed Wood loses its momentum and continues its death march on the shoulders of Johnny Depp, in the title role, an exemplary actor who can't do much more than smile heroically in the face of every humiliation. Sometimes this is funny. "Really?" Depp says, sounding like Jon Lovitz's Master Thespian on Saturday Night Live. "Worst film you ever saw? Well, my next one'll be better...
...cool Cash really is. (This is not a new idea: in 1968 a Columbia Records press release panted that Cash had finally "been discovered by the underground.") To heat up interest, the label arranged tiny, invitation-only concerts for the record-industry elite and young celebrities like Johnny Depp. MTV has not been overlooked -- Cash has made a video of Delia's Gone in which he stars with model Kate Moss, the barely 20- year-old waif goddess. Cash is even considering playing on the Lollapalooza alternative-music tour. Despite all the hype, Cash has remained remarkably serene and even...
...Depp plays Gilbert, a youngish person who might describe himself as a member of Generation X if he knew what that was. His life revolves around his family. The death of his father has left Gilbert in charge, and as his once-beautiful mother's way of mourning is to wallow in grotesque obesity, his older sister Amy (Laura Harrington) has taken over the maternal role. The Grape family is frozen in time. Momma's immobility reduces her to a permanent state of infancy, and mentally handicapped brother Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio) needs constant supervision...
Gilbert (Johnny Depp) might be the patron saint of all such caretakers. A grocery-store clerk in forlorn Endora, Iowa, he looks after his retarded brother (Leonardo DiCaprio), who likes to climb things, and his mountainous mom (Darlene Cates), who, at an immobile 500 lbs., is something of a local tourist attraction. Nor does the need stop at his front door. Gilbert must satisfy the sexual desires of a tartly cheerful matron (Mary Steenburgen), even as he is drawn to newcomer Becky (Juliette Lewis), a teenager whose ease and freedom seem like fresh oxygen in the coal mine of Gilbert...
...Last Picture Show. This picture show doesn't match that one. The script, by Peter Hedges from his novel, spins out a few too many eccentricities, and the direction, by Lasse Hallstrom (My Life as a Dog), meanders. But DiCaprio and Cates bring loopy authenticity to their roles, and Depp is, as always, a most effacing star. Here, as in Edward Scissorhands and Benny & Joon, he behaves wonderfully on screen. He should be even better when he gets the chance to misbehave as a demented director in Tim Burton's forthcoming Ed Wood...
