...recommendations lead to some unlikely places. Where you'd never expect to find an ounce of peace or greenery, the authors have found both: just off the congested roundabout of Place de Clichy is the Bistro des Dames (18 Rue des Dames), with its 30-table patio-oasis surrounded by ivy, bamboo and chirping sparrows. And the Latin American cultural center, La Maison de l'Amérique Latine (217 Boulevard Saint-Germain), holds a hidden jewel of alfresco dining in its elegant café, whose patio extends into the sprawling, manicured gardens of two Baroque-period mansions...
Though he fell out of favor with critics--and the public--in the 1960s, French filmmaker Jean Delannoy directed nearly 50 films during his career, including critical successes such as L'Eternel Retour and Dieu a Besoin des Hommes. In 1954 he was famously felled by a scathing review in Cahiers du Cinéma by critic (and later filmmaker) François Truffaut, who accused Delannoy of clinging to an antiquated and pedestrian style. Yet in 1946, before Truffaut's time, Delannoy earned a Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for his most notable work, La Symphonie Pastoral...
...tore through a Boy Scout camp and killed four teenagers. Rains then swelled the rivers and strained the levees, which burst indiscriminately. Iowa's second largest city, Cedar Rapids (pop. 124,000), and one of its smallest towns, Chelsea (pop. 276), were inundated. On Friday the 13th, downtown Des Moines was under voluntary evacuation. The surge was both overwhelming and fickle. Neighbors on high ground saw friends next door lose cars to a furious downpour. The massive tide is sweeping through Illinois, Missouri and points downstream, raising questions about the adequacy of the levee system designed to guard against flooding...
Following a 1.77-meter clearance on her first attempt in Wednesday’s NCAA Championship high jump preliminaries, junior Becky Christensen seized one of 16 coveted spots to compete in the finals for the event on Friday. At Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, the Celina, Tex. native and four-time NCAA high jump finalist finished in a three-way tie for 12th. Christensen made easy work of the opening height of 1.74, clearing it on her first attempt. It took her two attempts at the 1.77 mark, but then faced the 1.80-meter bar. Despite three solid attempts...
...Here in Des Moines, we've had flooding in pockets but have fared relatively well so far, compared to eastern Iowa (and to the 1993 flood). There's relief that the downtown area has largely been spared major damage, thanks to bolstered flood protection post-1993. But feverish attempts to bolster a levee near a neighborhood north of downtown ultimately failed. Watching televised scenes of water rushing over destroyed sandbags into streets where people live and work was not what my teenage son and I, among hundreds of volunteer sandbaggers in Des Moines, had hoped to see. But like many...
