When the government demands discriminatory practices against specific nationalities, it is simply reinforcing and, even worse, mandating the bigotry towards foreigners of Middle Eastern descent that has unfortunately been quite common after Sept. 11. One of Harvard’s most appealing attributes is that it is a multicultural institution. These goals cannot exist simultaneously with flagrantly discriminatory practices. If FAS tucks its tail between its legs and meekly surrenders to federal authority here, it would erode its own ideals...
...Under Suspicion A baggage handler arrested at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport after guns and explosives were found in the boot of his car was placed under formal investigation for the illegal possession of weapons and criminal association with a terrorist organization. Abderazak Besseghir, a French citizen of Algerian descent, said he had been framed by the family of his late wife, who blamed him for her death in a house fire last July. Despite his extraordinary success, Harlow was constantly plagued with depression and self-doubt. He was appallingly sexist in some ways yet treated female colleagues with absolute equality...
Alarming headlines last week suggested that international terrorism had come to Hong Kong. Three men of South Asian descent were arrested for allegedly trying to trade drugs for Stinger missiles, the shoulder-launched anti-aircraft weapons used to wipe out Soviet planes and helicopters in Afghanistan in the 1980s. A U.S. indictment of the three suspects claims that the arms were destined for al-Qaeda, and U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft has enthusiastically hailed the bust as a "strike against the terrorism/drug-trafficking nexus...
