Spiro T. Agnew, golfer, announced yesterday that he will once again enter the Bob Hope Desert Classic in Palm Springs, although his achievements have, in the past, been somewhat less than illustrious there. Agnew has played twice, maiming four people with tee shots. Pro golfer Doug Sanders, bloodied in 1970 by an Agnew drive, bemoaned "I was standing in the fairway--I thought I'd be safe there." The American Medical Association could not be reached for comment on Agnew's decision...
...Exception and the Rule is as concise and bitter as any of his sermons can be, Karl Langmann, investor-speculator-merchant, sets out across the Jahi desert with a load of unidentified but valuable goods, accompanied by a guide, a coolie, and a riding crop. His competitors are always right behind him; in trying to keep ahead he overworks both his men, eventually fires (unjustly) his guide, and shoots (intentionally) his coolie. I am still enough of a patriot, even a chauvinist, to feel that when we begin the restructuring of our society, America will need all her sons...
With its stereo, Dunhill pipe rack and mobile telephone, the Rolls is almost a house on wheels. Which is not too strange, really, because the road is Flip's only real home. "Quite often I feel the tension, and I'll go driving into the desert," he says. On such occasions he keeps a note pad handy to jot down his thoughts. "I don't go to create, I go to relax," he explains. "But I've never gone and not come back with something-a couple of stories, a handful of one-liners...
