...This summer, based on [all] the various proposals I have received, I'm going to generate a [legislative] green paper on universal suffrage. I'm not talking about intermediate steps. I'm talking about how Hong Kong can achieve universal suffrage-in terms of time scale, in terms of design, in terms of how we end up getting there from here. People can consult and discuss. And then I will make a recommendation to the central government in Beijing. I will resolve the question of universal suffrage totally, completely, within my next term...
...status quo-ballot by an electoral college of 800 members-is the best interim answer. It may not fully comply with democratic principles, but there are many other examples of pragmatism in our political design. Participation by foreign nationals is an obvious one. Permanent residents (those residing in Hong Kong for seven years or more), regardless of their nationality, can elect members of the Election Committee and the Legislative Council, and are not required to pledge allegiance to either Hong Kong or China. More than two decades ago, the Harvard University Art Museums (HUAM) hatched a plan to build a skybridge between the Arthur M. Sackler Museum and the Fogg Art Museum. The bridge never got built, but current plans for renovations and a new museum in Allston will seek to span the gaps in the University’s museums.Over the years, the University has always grappled with how to reconcile...
...tension between science and faith has escalated into a full-out war of attrition. It began with the debates over teaching creationism and evolutionary theory in the early 1990s, and 9/11 further opened the door for accusations about the harm religion and fundamentalism can cause. The ongoing debate over intelligent design is only the latest battlefield in this increasingly contentious culture war. Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris have introduced a new level of vehemence to the attacks on religion with their best-selling anti-religion polemics, which are at least as extreme as a hellfire and brimstone sermon from Jerry Falwell...
Hans Tutschku is an artist who defies classification. Although his first profession is composing, this associate professor of music and director of the Harvard University Studio for Electroacoustic Composition has experimented with performance art, sound installation, video art, and theater design. Tutschku has incorporated all of these disciplines into a new art exhibition called “TELL ME!…a secret…” at the Carpenter Center, which opened last Thursday and will run for five weeks. The exhibit features photographs with interactive sound components, as well as a sound and light installation. Tutschku...
