With a presidential campaign in full swing, the American flag may be the most pervasive symbol of the season. As a work of graphic design, it may also be the most taken for granted. This wasn't so back in the 1950s when Jasper Johns altered the course of American painting--Abstract Expressionism had been king-- with a series of bright, bold pictures of flags as well as targets and numerals. The works were blunt and direct, with no emotional charge. Johns never got into Pop, but those artists borrowed from him, as did Conceptualists and Minimalists. From...

CALVIN and KELLY KLEIN remained true to their design ideals even when dissolving their nine-year marriage: simple, stylish, nothing vulgar. The most puzzled-over and envied couple of their industry didn't even curtail their social schedule. They co-hosted a party and afterward broke the news to gossip diva Liz Smith. What arrogance! as if we Americans had anything good to export. In our own presidential election campaigns, we typically deal in character assassination and trivia instead of the real issues. Your story on how American consultants helped Boris Yeltsin design his re-election strategy will leave the Russian people feeling duped and betrayed, further alienating them from Yeltsin without gaining any Brownie points for the U.S. Imagine that the tables are turned: Bill Clinton wins the election in November, and Pravda prints a major story on how a bunch of Russians sitting in a hotel room in Washington drank vodka...
