...Hollywood prop man could design a more fitting set for the top rifleman than Heston's study, situated on a ridge overlooking Coldwater Canyon, with a view of the distant Pacific Ocean. Models of Air Force bombers and spent .50-cal. machine-gun casings adorn a side table ("I was a gunner in the war"). A portrait of Hemingway ("He was not a very nice man") hangs above a cartoon from the strip Hagar the Horrible ("with whom I have great sympathy"). Stacked around his desk like a fortress are volumes on the Boer War, the Civil War and World...
...lead plaintiff in a high-profile lawsuit by three Chicago families seeking to make gun companies pay for the violent deaths of their loved ones. The suit spells out what plaintiffs say is a cozy relationship between the gun industry and criminals who use its products. Manufacturers design certain guns to appeal to criminals, the plaintiffs say, like snub-nosed revolvers that can be easily hidden under a shirt. The companies then advertise to criminals with felon-friendly claims, the suit charges, like the boast that the TEC-DC9 assault weapon offers "excellent resistance to fingerprints." And the weapons...
...million, Seven Days' pilot is reputedly the most expensive produced for the new season, twice as pricey as most others. Where's the moolah going? Into the special effects, from computer-generated images of the White House exploding (again) and the bombing of the Speaker's limousine to the design and building of a huge 24-ft.-high, 45-ft.-wide sphere for time travel. The show stars Jonathan LaPaglia, once a real-life emergency-room doctor who turned in his stethoscope for show biz, as Frank Parker, a former CIA renegade who's drafted into Operation Back-Step...
...punch, a certain concision. Without that, they straggle. Told in outline, the plot--if you can call it that--of his short film Fashions sounds at least notionally amusing. A fixed camera stares at a rather mannish-looking model standing on a turntable, wearing an outfit of Ray's design. She revolves once, and then we cut to the same model wearing a different dress. There are about a hundred of these changes in the course of the 12 minutes the film lasts, and every outfit is as banal as the last. It's meant (one presumes) to satirize...
...while it's easy for a cartoon character to be Mickey Mouse (especially when he hasn't appeared in a full-length film in decades), it's quite an accomplishment for a human being under Truman Show conditions. Jordan's public image is empty by immaculate design. "I'm around him all the time, and what he has to put up with--media attention and people making demands of him and wanting him to be here, there and everywhere--he does a tremendous job. He's done a great thing with his image and really kept it pretty clean," says...
