Echoes of Hell and its abyss of despair resounded from Mumbai at the end of November, when terrorists rampaged through some of the city's most storied sites. From the infernal glare of smoke and flame that wreathed the Taj Mahal Hotel and the nearby Oberoi came harrowing tales of the demonic cruelty carried out inside. Hotel guests were lined up against walls and sprayed with machine-gun fire; then, according to some accounts, the terrorists placed grenades in the mouths of fallen hostages as traps for pursuing security forces. ...Down with Love, were in-your-face comedies with a Pop art design scheme; they aimed to get to endearing by going through aggressive. Reed found a subtler tone in his Vince Vaughn-Jennifer Aniston hit The Break-Up, in which both the humor and the despair rose from domestic behavior that, if exaggerated for dramatic effect, was still recognizable. Yes Man straddles those two styles. It ambles along, Judd Apatow-style (and includes a fellatio gag that should have earned the movie an R rating) while affording Carrey a few opportunities for his patented rubber-face comedy pyrotechnics...
...Despair in Zimbabwe I have watched the downward spiral in Zimbabwe for more than 20 years [The World, Dec. 8]. Robert Mugabe and his gang ensured the country's downfall, and the crippling of its citizens and its political opposition to a point where no solution is possible however hard Morgan Tsvangirai works. The world leaders (including Thabo Mbeki and most political leaders in Africa) chose to ignore the real problem: Mugabe - a corrupt and possibly mentally unstable power freak. My appeal to the world is to get into Zimbabwe now and help put this country and its struggling citizens...
