...scientists unravel some of cancer's deepest secrets and leading doctors closer to the ultimate goal of any cancer therapy--a cure. Think of the stem cell as a tumor's master print; as long as the original exists, copies can be made, and the disease can persist. But destroy the tumor at its source, and the abnormal cells can't survive. "This represents a conceptual revolution in cancer biology," says Dr. Robert Weinberg, a cancer-research pioneer at the Whitehead Institute in Cambridge, Mass. "This is going to explain the way a wide variety of human cancers originate...
...been substantially outweighed by the thorough vilification of the ostensibly rich, white, privileged team members and the elitist university they represent. Never have I heard a Duke student utter, “Well, she is a stripper.” Blaming the victim and using her occupation to destroy her credibility cannot be condoned. But typecasting 46 individuals as unsurprisingly racist rapists and juxtaposing them with a diligent student, single mother of two? Not an unrelated evil. JANE CHONG Durham, N.C. It leaves you questioning whether the “triumph” of medicine is really a victory for mankind, or something that will destroy mankind—maybe something for all those pre-meds to consider before taking Chem...
Before the antiwar banners start to unfurl, however, let me make clear--I am not opposed to war. I would gladly have traded my general's stars for a captain's bars to lead our troops into Afghanistan to destroy the Taliban and al-Qaeda. And while I don't accept the stated rationale for invading Iraq, my view--at the moment--is that a precipitous withdrawal would be a mistake. It would send a signal, heard around the world, that would reinforce the jihadists' message that America can be defeated, and thus increase the chances of future conflicts...
