...folks in Washington fight over are trivial; we don't know what to do when we come up against a matter of life and death. If Chandra was a good friend, wouldn't Condit be more stricken? Isn't he betraying whatever friendship they had by not volunteering every detail about their relationship? The only way his conduct makes sense is if he's slavishly heeding the advice of all criminal attorneys: say nothing, for it could be used against you. But that makes him look guilty and hardhearted, whether...

Aside from that detail, the Einstein connection made the idea of dark energy, or antigravity, seem somewhat less nutty when Schmidt and Perlmutter weighed in. Of course, some astrophysicists had lingering doubts. Maybe the observers didn't really have the supernovas' brightness right; perhaps the light from faraway stellar explosions was dimmed by some sort of dust. The unique properties of a cosmological constant, moreover, would make the universe slow down early on, then accelerate. That's because dark energy grows as a function of space. There wasn't much space in the young, small universe, so back then...

Blake, however, did all these things, with the result that his books, tiny and rare as they are, "illuminated" in a form of color etching that was essentially his invention, possess an astonishing integration of clarity, density and richness of organic detail. They ennoble the very idea of illustration and erase the boundaries that supposedly distinguish it from "art." You cannot imagine separating the text from the design, or the design from the text, and so there has hardly been an English book creator since--not even William Morris, the greatest one to emerge since Blake--who did not feel...

...Another mortician agrees to talk in more detail, but asks to remain anonymous because he's worried that he "might not live to see tomorrow's sunrise." He is a man of imposing girth, dressed in a silk shirt printed with fierce-looking dragons. His office is three flights up a dark, narrow staircase and everything in it?the stuffed tiger, the golden gong?is half concealed by red lighting and a haze of incense smoke. He insists government reforms are being orchestrated by officials with ties to larger funeral companies that want to see firms like his go belly...

...eyewitness to the murders, Rajiv Shahi, son-in-law of Birendra's brother, went before the press last week to tell what he saw. TIME has contacted two other survivors who corroborate nearly every detail of Rajiv's story: that Crown Prince Dipendra entered the suite of rooms and cold-bloodedly gunned down his parents, brother, sister and five other relatives. The other witnesses are both uncles of Dipendra. Ravi, a widower, was married to a daughter of the late King Tribhuvan. Maheshwar Kumar Singh, 66, is married to another daughter of Tribhuvan. None of the three witnesses...
