...Orwell kept different diaries for different things. "His domestic diaries show that Orwell was a very enthusiastic and conscientious gardener and farmer," says Gordon Bowker, one of Orwell's many biographers. "He would detail the state of the weather, what he had planted, what needed to be pruned, etc." Orwell's political diaries, which will start appearing from Sept. 7, chronicle his daily thoughts on Europe's descent into World War II. Those writings, says Bowker, are based mostly on the many newspapers Orwell read and show him "trying out his political ideas...
...advisers previously admitted." These were ominous words, playing into the old story line about Republicans using budget gimmickry. But the statement was largely based on an interpretation of a tax plan - for an optional alternative income-tax system, with a flat rate - that McCain has never described in detail, let alone with enough specificity to gauge. And it uses a budgetary scoring system that the Obama campaign rejects in calculations of its own proposals...
Instead, I know the specific number I ate because I am keeping a food diary. I write down everything I consume, with great detail. When Dawsey remarks on how cheerful Juliet is, she bristles: "A sunny nature? A light heart? I have never been...
...wrote to be insightful and accurate. But by implying disapproval of Cuomo's management style, you missed an important part of the picture. What I find most unusual about Cuomo is his ability to be both a hands-on executive, capable of mastering a great deal of governmental detail, and a chairman of the board who sets the broad policies and agenda for his administration. Few successful executives in or out of government are as capable in both facets of management simultaneously. James L. Larocca Lloyd Harbor, N.Y. Cuomo's philosophy that there be a ''sharing of benefits and burdens...
