He takes the reader to the edge of a gruesome scene, then steps back and focuses on the sort of mundane detail that sticks in one's mind more firmly than any blood-splattered image. Describing the immolation of suspected communist sympathizers?women and children included?in an air raid shelter, he focuses with almost casual detachment on the sound of slaughter: "Suddenly a muffled, moaning sound, kind of like the 'oooh' a crowd of people might make, rose up all around us like some sort of wind?and then...

Bono's great gift is to take what has made him famous--charm, clarity of voice, an ability to touch people in their secret heart--combine those traits with a keen grasp of the political game and obsessive attention to detail, and channel it all toward getting everyone, from world leaders to music lovers, to engage with something overwhelming in its complexity. Although it's tempting for some to cast his global road show as the vanity project of a pampered celebrity, the fact is that Bono gets results. ...panel appears to provide the most clues to the purpose of the mural. Researchers suggest that the mural was intended to represent the Mayan king’s divine right to rule. Saturno and his team suspect that the king is buried in a recently-discovered tomb nearby. The detail and skill shown in the mural are of particular interest to scholars, who now have evidence that wall painting was a much older Mayan art than previously thought. Saturno’s research has been funded by National Geographic, and the details of the find will be described...
