...facts about Ruby (né Jacob Rubenstein, alias J. Leon Rubenstein), the seedy Dallas strip-joint owner who yearned to be a mensch, a pillar of the community, but always remained a smalltime schwanz. Commission sleuths assembled a voluminous dossier that told everything-and nothing-about him. They could detail his gross income and net profits for February 1958, but they could not discover his exact birth date and wound up listing eight in the year 1911. They learned that his boyhood nickname was "Sparky," then gave three different reasons for the origin of the name...

Though Strads have been copied to within one-thousandth of an inch of the original, the sound never measures up. The reasons for this, as diverse and elusive as music itself, constitute a mystery and mystique that is unmatched...

...What gives the letters an extra resonance is the frequency with which life prefigures art. Joyce's brief and platonic affair with a young Swiss woman, Martha Fleischmann, is replayed in some detail in the Bloom-Gerty McDowell episode in Ulysses. The few letters from Joyce's rakehell father have all the style and fresh idiom of Simon Dedalus in the book. And Molly Bloom's long, affirmative soliloquy comes to life in the letters of his wife, Nora-artless, rambling and totally innocent of punctuation, syntax or correct spelling...
