Despite the self-consciousness that hampers it, the movie is impressive in its gloss and technical accomplishment. Film is inherently an effective tool for the mystery genre, and Ross handles it with artistry, capturing all the richness of detail and scene that fall within its purview. The camera models Holmes himself. In the movie's opening, a demented Holmes speeds across Europe in pursuit of Moriarty. He leaves London's Victoria Station with its throngs of people and loud, smoke-bellowing engines and passes into the gleaming green Austrian countryside. With his bloodhound Toby on the scent of Moriarty...

There are a number of small points of detail which are minor elements in the mosa Now, getting to the more important points--the documents themselves. Though it is drenched in alienation, The Woman Warrior never whines. Author Kingston avoids rhetoric for a wealth of detail-old customs and legends, the feel of Chinese enclaves transported to the California of her childhood. Even at their most poignant, her stories sing. Thousands of books have bubbled up out of the American melting pot. This should be one of those that will be remembered. Paul Gray

Toland is all too gullible about some of those witnesses. The book records without serious question things like the claim of Dr. Erwin Giesing that he tried to assassinate Hitler with an overdose of cocaine. Toland also relishes obscure detail to the point of tedium. He includes, for instance, a minute description of the shower facilities at the men's home in Vienna where a young and impoverished Hitler lived for three years just before World War I. Yet in larger matters Toland strays woefully from the record. He asserts that Hitler was "still a member in good standing...
