Part of the problem is that Strouse's narrative is oddly impersonal Despite direct quotations and a fair amount of detail, the subject remains distant. Too often Strouse does not successfully relate information about the Civil War, women's rights, or the history of nervous diseases to Alice's own experience. In the end, one feels one knows about Alice James, but one does not really know...

Santmyer has not played much of a tune on that instrument, but her honest attempt is remarkable for its attention to detail-and, of course, its longevity. One suspects, considering the circus surrounding the book, that it is the publisher who has oversold the song and dance...
