...Over the last two decades of his life, Ted would supervise other half-hour specials, with animation artists of gradually diminishing stature: Freleng on "The Lorax" and "The Hoober-Bloob Highway," Ralph Bakshi on "The Butter Battle Book." The character detail was more meager, the backgrounds less vivid. Each of the later films was more didactic than artistic: decrying corporate greed and ecological devastation ("The Lorax"), indoctrinating children before they are born ("Hoober-bLoob"), delineating the madness of America's arms race with the Soviet Union. Of course the liberal in me, and the humanist too, cheer these sentiments...

Inspired as much by Renaissance iconography, the Stations of the Cross and the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary as by the Gospels' terse narratives, Gibson portrays Jesus' agony and death in acute and lavish detail. In the end, all that gore tends to blunt not only the story's natural power but even the sense of horror at what a god-man has to endure to save all men. ...stars) at a guy in samurai armor and then decapitating him in one smooth motion is something you do, like, all the time. Game-play-wise, Ninja Gaiden is a neat combination of fighting and exploring, and although it's quite violent, the action is rendered in such lush detail--streaming sunlight, falling leaves, birds circling overhead--that it becomes almost balletic, like a Jet Li movie shot by Ang Lee. Ninja Gaiden is a tough game with a steep learning curve, but nobody ever said fighting evil was easy. Especially in a purple pantsuit. --By Lev Grossman
